FAQS + WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT DOES A SESSION LOOK LIKE?

Your session will be about an hour to an hour and a half total. There may be a bit of walking required (I will give you a heads up if it's more than about 10 minutes of walking) to get to where we will be shooting. Wear something that you feel comfortable + confident in, and most importantly, try to make the most of the shoot by having fun with your partner! You're already dressed up, make it a full date night and find something special to do afterward. Don't be nervous- I will help guide you to feel as comfortable as possible and keep things light :)

We will do a combination of movement prompts and a few standard poses to get a diverse collection of photos. I want to ensure you are both comfortable, so if there is something I suggest you do that you don't feel fits you guys, don't be afraid to let me know. However, sometimes things may feel a bit weird, but end up being some of the most favorite photos! While I know it can be intimidating to be in front of the camera, just remember, I am doing my best to capture your love as naturally and beautifully as I possibly can!

WHAT TO WEAR

I generally recommend sticking to neutrals and earthy tones. Accessories are a good idea to seamlessly add variety. If choosing a pattern, have your partner compliment your color scheme with something more plain. Most couples prefer to bring a "fancier" outfit as well as a more casual outfit. Just keep in mind, depending on location, there may not be an ideal place to change- but you can always hide behind a tree for a quick change. Many women choose to wear one outfit that is more form-fitting and another that is flowy, and I have noticed most do prefer to wear sleeves (one less thing to worry about- especially for candids!)

However, these suggestions are simply guidelines that are great to fall back on when in doubt. My main goal is to photograph your love as authentically as possible and I love when people get bold with their outfits, too! It's most important to feel confident in what you choose to wear. I'm here to capture your style as you bring it!

MORE WARDROBE TIPS

  • Busier backgrounds = simpler outfits. Simple backgrounds = feel free to get as funky/creative as you want!
  • Avoid matching patterns (matching plaid shirts, or kids in the exact same outfit)
  • Choose a color palette of 2-4 colors to avoid the photos feeling chaotic due to wardrobe
  • Be careful with super thin stripes or busy patterns as these can sometimes look unflattering or dizzying

Unless you are able to coordinate a trial run with your HMUA, you do not need to have your hair and makeup done professionally if you don't want to. Most clients have always been very happy that they chose to either get lash extensions or use false lashes for their shoot though. They help your eyes pop! Heavy, dark eyeshadow can sometimes take away from your eyes in photographs.

As far as hair goes, do what makes you feel most confident. If you want messy, windblown, come with your hair natural and loose. If you prefer curls, go for it!

MISCELLANEOUS

SHOES! Depending on how adventurous your session is, I would recommend bringing a spare pair of comfortable walking shoes to use until we reach our shoot location. Sometimes we may encounter mud or walking paths that are less than ideal for heels. Honestly, the majority of my clients end up shoeless for at least part of their shoot!

Having your nails done is always nice, especially for engagement shoots where the ring will be a focus point.

MORE QUICK TIPS!

I will probably repeat this at your session, but in case you are the prepared type, here they are:

FOR THE GUYS:

If you're ever feeling uncomfortable or awkward, remember to connect with your partner in some way or another. This is easiest accomplished with touch. Counter any awkward moments by kissing your partner on the cheek or head. Grab your partner's waist or hand. Bringing closeness and connection are going to take the pictures to the next level! If you ever don't know what to do with your other hand while walking or moving- put it in your pocket. Last but not least, if you are not looking forward to this experience, just remember it is very important to your partner, and I promise...it will be over before you know it and you'll also be happy to have these photos!

FOR THE LADIES:

Simply aspire to feel as comfortable as you can in what you choose to wear. But really, just breathe, relax, and know that the better experience you have, the more likely it is that you will love your photos! Enjoy the time with your partner in the beautiful space you are in, and try to remember these pictures aren't headshots, but more like a reflection of your relationship. I will be doing my absolute best to guide you and make you feel like your most beautiful self from behind the camera!
